Sleep Concern

Could my thyroid be the problem?

Thyroid imbalance quietly disrupting your sleep and energy.

Educational information — not medical advice. Talk to your care team about what's right for you.

Overview

Thyroid disorders are common, often subtle, and frequently missed as a cause of sleep and energy problems. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause fatigue, cold intolerance, and fragmented sleep, while an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can cause insomnia, heat intolerance, and a racing heart at night. Because the symptoms overlap with many other conditions, the thyroid is worth checking when sleep and energy are off without a clear explanation.

Common Causes

  • Hypothyroidism — low thyroid hormone — causing fatigue, cold sensitivity, and non-restorative sleep.
  • Hyperthyroidism — excess thyroid hormone — causing insomnia, anxiety, and a racing heart at night.
  • Autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's or Graves'), the most common cause.
  • Thyroid changes post-pregnancy or with age.
  • Inadequately treated or undiagnosed thyroid dysfunction.

What You May Be Experiencing

  • Hypothyroidism: fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain, dry skin, and unrefreshing sleep.
  • Hyperthyroidism: insomnia, anxiety, heat intolerance, palpitations, and weight loss.
  • Sleep and energy changes that don't resolve with good sleep hygiene.
  • A racing heart or feeling 'wired' at night (hyperthyroidism).
  • Daytime exhaustion that seems disproportionate to sleep (hypothyroidism).

Dr. Morse's Approach

Dr. Morse treats unexplained sleep and energy problems with a low threshold for checking thyroid function. A simple blood test can identify or rule out a thyroid cause, and effective treatment exists for both under- and overactive thyroid. She is attentive to the subtle presentations — especially in women and post-pregnancy — and she treats the thyroid as one of the first medical conditions to evaluate when sleep and fatigue are chronic and unexplained.

Treatment Options

Behavioral

A symptom diary, including sleep/wake habits, to clarify the pattern; consistent sleep timing while the cause is investigated.

Lifestyle

Supportive sleep hygiene and energy pacing while awaiting evaluation and treatment.

Medical

Thyroid function testing (TSH, free T4); treatment of the identified thyroid disorder under clinical guidance.

Your Night-time Routine

A practical, step-by-step wind-down built around this concern's specific drivers. Follow it consistently for two to three weeks — rhythm, not perfection, is what resets sleep.

  1. 1
    8:00 PM

A calming wind-down; for hyperthyroidism, extra attention to calming a racing heart and mind.

  2. 2
    8:30 PM

Temperature comfort: warmer room for hypothyroidism, cooler for hyperthyroidism.

  3. 3
    9:00 PM

Screens off; warm, dim light to support melatonin.

  4. 4
    9:30 PM

Consistent sleep time; if you have palpitations, heat/cold intolerance, or unexplained fatigue, ask your clinician to check your thyroid.

  5. 5
    If diagnosed

Take thyroid medication consistently, as prescribed, and follow up for monitoring.

When to Seek Help

If you have persistent fatigue, insomnia, temperature intolerance, weight changes, or palpitations without a clear cause, ask your clinician to check your thyroid. A simple test can identify a treatable cause that good sleep hygiene alone won't fix.
